Event

People who have been incarcerated are often stigmatized. In this exhibit of poems written in the Monroe County Jail, we see the breadth of their identities.

For the past few years, New Leaf New Life has held weekly poetry workshops in the Monroe County Jail. Their classes approach poetry with an eye toward revision: revising our writing, our selves, our relationships, and our communities.

Both inside and outside the jail, it is clear that certain aspects of our world are in dire need of change. Reading and writing poetry has offered us insights into these flaws without lapsing into despair. We hope these words offer you the same.

Poems from the Monroe County Jail is on display in the Gallery Exhibit Space on the first floor of Monroe County Public Library through February 28th. This is an NEA Big Read exhibit as our community reads and discusses Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng.
