The Honorable Richard Lugar, former U.S. Senator from Indiana, will deliver the second annual Patrick O’Meara International Lecture. Indiana’s longest-serving senator (1976-2013), Richard Lugar is one of our nation’s most respected statesmen, exercising leadership on critical issues such as food security, nuclear non-proliferation, energy independence, and free trade.
In the Senate, Lugar chaired the Foreign Relations Committee and the Agriculture Committee. He led initiatives, including a biofuels research program, to help decrease the nation’s dependency on foreign oil. In 1991, he forged a bipartisan partnership with Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.) to establish the Nunn-Lugar Program, which, to date, has deactivated more than 7,500 nuclear warheads once aimed at the United States.
A two-term mayor of Indianapolis (1968-75), Lugar holds 46 honorary degrees from colleges and universities. He and his wife, Charlene, have four sons and 13 grandchildren. The lecture honors Patrick O'Meara, who served Indiana University for two decades as dean and vice president for international affairs and now serves as Special Advisor to the President and Chair of the Center for International Education and Development Assistance at IU.
Lugar will speak on “American Foreign Policy: Challenges and Opportunities.”
