We will analyze the often conflicting images of contemporary Brazil through a close examination of its artistic manifestations, including literary texts, popular music, and film. Our discussion will focus on three aspects: the construction of a Brazilian national identity; ethnicity and its effects on negotiations of social mobility; and Brazilian interpersonal communication, with an emphasis on its most distinctive features.
