The popular cinema abounds with swashbuckling characters such as Indiana Jones and Lara Croft. The portrayals of archaeologists and archaeological knowledge in movies, however, are decidedly different from the actual work that archaeologists do. We'll explore the effects of Indiana Jones in building public interest in archaeology and look at Egyptian mummies as the earliest source of inspiration for movies about world archaeology. In our conversation, we'll address modern issues such as looting, exploitation, cultural property, antiquities trading, and cultural heritage. We'll also talk about how artifacts can acquire lives of their own. Register at http://go.iu.edu/6Dn or call (812)855-9335.
