Stephen King relates the act of writing to the closest example of telepathy among humans. So when someone tells you there is a child and he is sad, what do you see? What do you feel?
Now, what if someone tells you the child crouches in the corner his arms blanketed around him?
Which line allows you access to the inner world of the little boy's mind? It is likely the second.
In this six-week course, through mining the work of published poets, in class exercises, group collaboration, and by focusing extensively on student writing, we will learn how poets invoke emotion through physical details, structure, and most importantly, how our words give and change meaning.
