We all know the story: Saint Nicholas makes his list, checks it twice, marking down who’s naughty or nice.

But according to a 17th century Alpine legend, that’s not where the tale ends.

While nice children are rewarded with gifts from Saint Nicholas, naughty children are punished by his companions -- the Krampus.

The Krampus is a horde of tall and hairy beasts with long horns. Some take back the presents Saint Nicholas has given, leaving a lump of coal in their places. Some swat at naughty children with a switch. Others reach out and touch children’s faces, leaving an ashen mark that attracts bad dreams.

On December 8, the Krampus is coming to Bloomington to remind us about the importance of being good and what can happen to those who behave badly.

The Krampus Night festivities will begin on the northwest portion of Bloomington’s B-Line trail with a Krampus march. Saint Nicholas and his angels will lead the way passing out ‘Naughty’ and ‘Nice’ stickers. ‘Nice’ participants may watch from a secure distance as the beasts approach; they will receive candy from Saint Nicholas and his angels. ‘Naughty’ children and adults can taunt the Krampus and endure small torments as they pass by. After the march, Saint Nicholas will corrall the Krampus and they will visit Rhino’s Youth Center, The Bluebird and Jake’s.

Krampus Night is organized by the Krampus Legend and Arts Workshop (KLAW), a collective of Bloomington artists and organizers. The group was the recipient of a grant from The City of Bloomington Arts Commission (BAC) to create films, puppet shows and a parade to promote the legend of the Krampus.

This event is free and open to all ages.
