Among all animals, chimpanzees have historically been described as showing the greatest frequency and diversity of tool behavior. It has also been speculated that chimpanzees are “the only true tool user” aside from humans. Are these conclusions still valid? In this lecture, an updated analysis will be presented that addresses this question. Data from the other great apes, as well as capuchin monkeys, will be included. In the process, an answer to the question “Are there real differences in tool use across great apes?” will be offered.
