"AKADOI EPERA" (written in Embera Language) is a photography and video exhibit presentation by Alexandra McNichols-Torroledo who attempts to visually document everyday life, daily practices, record cultural and educational rituals and beliefs of the Embera people, Colombian indigenous tribe whose existence is continually threatened by ethnic cleansing, military upheavals and guerilla war. Fundamentally, McNichols-Torroledo’s interests are based on questions of heritage and communication of one's cultural values, whether that communication takes place across generations and cultures or displacement. Her work challenges the traditional values of artistic commerce and fetishization of art object and instead takes up as its subject the problematic of facilitating social and cultural interaction by providing humanitarian help and literacy to the Embera people.
