April 6, 2012 - First Friday Gallery Reception 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM - Sharon L. Hudson, Quiltmaker and Cori Mitchell, Painter in Wellness Arts Gallery. The exhibit continues through April 30th, and is open during cafe hours.

10% of Quilter’s Comfort tea sales in the Cafe from 5:00pm to 8:00pm will be donated to the Feed Our Hungry Task Force of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington to benefit Monroe County United Ministries.

Quilt Artist Sharon L. Hudson of Arizona, made her first quilt when she was a young mother. “I have always made things, and I love the process of creating.” I have made quilts using almost every type of material, and now have returned to using cotton fiber. I find it the most satisfying.” “I can’t remember when I did not sew. For years my focus was on designing and making clothing. I had a costume design shop called “The Perfect Look by Shar”. I started quilting as a hobby; then it took over. Most of my quilts are custom work. I have exhibited in many places, including the Arizona State Museum.

“I find each step of quilt making, from the beginning to the end, a real challenge. It is hard to say what part I like best. I Love the pure creativity involved in conceiving and designing a new quilt. I love piecing new ideas.”

Everyday I walk in my neighborhood with my dog Buddy Boy for natural inspiration. Recently, I have focused on making a bigger, bolder statement by piecing larger format quilts. I love the bold colors & designs in African Fabrics, and I use them a great deal in my work. With the larger format, I am learning how to quilt the larger works I’m creating on my long arm quilting machine.

Cori Mitchell was born and raised in Sterling Colorado until her family moved to Bloomington when she was 18 years old. She had suffered a traumatic brain injury when she slid on some ice going to school one early wintry morning in November of 1987. She was 17 years old. Before her accident she had discovered a love and flare for art thru her art classes in high school. After several years of intense in-home therapy guided by Philadelphia's Glen Doman, she was drawn back to art. Due to her ataxia on her right hand and weakness on her left side, she has been learning how to express herself with color working with her Art Teacher, Patricia C. Coleman. Cori is an active participant in the South Central ArtsWORK Indiana monthly program in Bloomington.

The Wellness Arts Gallery is located in Patricia’s Wellness Arts Café & Quilter’s Comfort Teas at 725 West Kirkwood Avenue (at the end of Arts Row). The gallery features the work of local artist and craftspeople. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm; first Friday 1:00pm to 8:00pm. For information call 812-334-8155.
