A Step in Time Across the Line: Recent Work by Chee Wang Ng
March 11 to May 7, 2017
Special Exhibitions Gallery, first floor

This spring, The Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University will present A Step in Time Across the Line: Recent Work by Chee Wang Ng, the artist’s first solo museum presentation. Featuring large-scale conceptual photography, video, and installation work, including two new series of works that have never before been shown, the exhibition will shed light on traditional Chinese culture and the immigrant experience. Through the use of iconic Chinese symbols, artifacts, and Western memorabilia—such as porcelain figures, rice bowls, Chinese postal stamps, and chopsticks—juxtaposed with distinctly American imagery, such as Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell's soup cans, the exhibition explores what it means to be Chinese in an increasingly multicultural and trans-national world, through the lens of diaspora identity.

In conjunction with the special exhibition, a tour program will explore the visually arresting and thought-provoking works of contemporary artist Chee Wang Ng. To arrange a tour, contact the museum's tour manager, Patsy Rhan, at prahn@indiana.edu.

Abstract Painting in Europe, 1949-1968
March 11 to May 7, 2017
Judi and Milt Stewart Hexagon Gallery, first floor

This exhibition will focus on works by European abstract artists from the post World War II period of 1949-1968, taken from the Eskenazi Museum of Art's permanent collection. Artists from Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Hungary, and Poland will be on view. This exhibition shines a light on an interesting area of the museum's collection, surveying what abstract artists in Europe were doing during the tumultuous period between the division of Germany into East and West in 1949, and the civil and political unrest of the 1960s.
